Ecological breeding of purebred Limousin cattle

The main activity of the Milire organic farm is the breeding of purebred Limousin cattle. Currently, we raise 400 Limousin cows, 350 young cattle, 200 Limousin oxen, and 20 Limousin bulls.

History

In 2007, we decided to seriously improve our herd (until then we only had crossbreeds).

Our new breed had to meet 5 conditions before a final decision was made.

1) Excellent meat quality
2) Calvings without complications
3) Strong physique
4) Pleasant character
5) Good fertility

We decided on the French Limousin breed, because there is good experience with this breed in terms of fertility, calving, milk production, character and health. Just like in Milíře, in Limoges there are high-altitude meadows and low temperatures in winter.

It was very challenging to start with a new herd, but our experiences have been good so far.

In 2008 we purchased 90 head of pregnant heifers.

We selected them with the help of five specialists: from Portugal, the Netherlands, and the Czech Republic, and of course, French livestock breeders helped us. We selected the animals piece by piece from French Limousin breeders.

At the same time, we bought four breeding bulls in this way.

In 2010 we bought six more breeding bulls in France. This time we bought them at an auction of French Limousin pedigree cattle, where fifty bulls were offered for sale. Attention was also paid to ensuring that they did not have double muscling.

In 2011 we bought six more good bulls, who were born in France, and since 2012 we have also been breeding our own purebred breeding bulls.

In 2014 we purchased stables with a capacity for 400 head of cattle, which we are continuously renovating and improving the mechanization and cattle breeding.

All the cattle on our farm, which is located at an altitude of 700 meters, are still out on pasture.

We are very satisfied with our herd. 93% of births are problem-free and the cattle have healthy legs to this day. The animals have a very good character!
